Description
SS-31 (Elamipretide, also known as Bendavia or MTP-131) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂) that selectively targets and accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It binds specifically to cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane that is essential for optimal electron transport chain function. By stabilizing cardiolipin-cytochrome c interactions, SS-31 optimizes electron transport, reduces electron leak, and diminishes mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production at the source rather than scavenging ROS after formation. This mechanism makes SS-31 fundamentally different from conventional antioxidants. Research has investigated SS-31 for age-related mitochondrial dysfunction, cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury, neurodegenerative diseases, and renal conditions. Supplied as a lyophilized powder. For research use only.
